There are 4 main steps to Medicaid reimbursement for doulas in Virginia.

    1. Train and certify via a VA Cert Board (aka Medicaid approved) approved training organization

    2. Apply for State Certification

    3. Enroll as a Medicaid provider

    4. Contract with Medicaid MCO’s

The Community Doula Professional Pathway enrolls trainees into an approved VA Cert Board community doula training and will support them throughout the certification, Medicaid enrollment and MCO contracting process.

  • To receive community based doula services the recipient must be enrolled as a Medicaid member. A community based doula meets with families during pregnancy and provides practices and education related to the birth and postpartum experience.

They connect a family to necessary resources, and act as an emotional support throughout the perinatal time. Community doulas coach the family and birthing person through labor, provide comfort measures, and help the birthing person navigate the medical setting.

After the birth they provide guidance on newborn care, breastfeeding, and practices that encourage optimal postpartum healing.

  • We partner with local organizations to counsel pregnant Medicaid members about doula services. Per request of the birthing person we connect members with State Certified community doulas. If you are a referring organization interested in partnership, please fill out our inquiry form.

  • Professional enrichment opportunities for local birth workers that are members of NOVA CDP. More information coming soon!
